CNC Carving Materials: Wood, WPC, Acrylic and ACP

A practical comparison of four materials used in CNC carving and cutting, including appearance, common uses, and questions to confirm.

Material is not a cosmetic choice added at the end of a CNC project. It affects achievable detail, edge appearance, weight, finishing, installation, exposure, and the machining approach. Wood, WPC, acrylic, and ACP can all be useful—but for different reasons and different kinds of work.

This guide is a starting point, not a machining specification. Exact suitability depends on the material grade and thickness, the tool and machine, the design, the intended environment, and the finish. Confirm project-specific requirements with the workshop or your production specialist.

Wood for CNC carving

Wood is the material most people associate with carved doors, relief panels, decorative features, and sacred art. Its grain gives the finished surface natural variation that manufactured sheet materials do not reproduce. It can take deep relief and fine detail when the species, stock, scale, and cutting strategy are suitable.

Where wood works well

  • 3D door and wall-panel reliefs;
  • decorative and sacred artwork;
  • furniture details, mouldings, and feature components;
  • lettering, signs, plaques, and presentation pieces;
  • projects where a stained, oiled, painted, or sealed natural surface is desired.

Questions to ask about wood

“Wood” is not one uniform material. Species differ in grain, hardness, stability, colour, availability, and finishing behaviour. Solid wood can move with moisture; boards can contain knots, checks, or grain direction that affects the result. Engineered wood products behave differently again.

Confirm the species or board type, finished thickness, relief depth, grain direction, acceptable natural variation, surface finish, and whether the piece will be indoors, outdoors, or in a changing environment.

WPC for CNC work

Wood-plastic composite (WPC) is a manufactured material made from wood-derived and polymer components in proportions that vary by product. Its comparatively consistent composition can be useful for selected decorative panels and routed work where a manufactured board is preferred.

Where WPC may fit

  • selected decorative panels and patterns;
  • applications where consistent sheet dimensions are useful;
  • projects designed around a painted or manufactured-material finish;
  • certain moisture-conscious applications, subject to the actual product specification.

Questions to ask about WPC

WPC products are not identical. Density, core composition, surface, heat response, screw holding, span, and exposure ratings vary. Do not assume every WPC board can replace structural wood or accept the same fine detail. Ask about the exact board, thickness, intended environment, finishing system, and how the piece will be supported or installed.

Acrylic for CNC cutting and detailing

Acrylic is a rigid plastic sheet valued for visual clarity, colour options, and a clean contemporary appearance. In CNC work it is commonly associated with signs, displays, letters, decorative profiles, inlays, templates, and components rather than traditional deep carved relief.

Where acrylic works well

  • profile-cut letters, logos, and decorative shapes;
  • display, signage, and interior feature elements;
  • templates, covers, and precisely shaped components;
  • layered work that uses opaque, coloured, or transparent sheet.

Questions to ask about acrylic

Acrylic can chip, crack, scratch, or soften from heat when the setup is unsuitable. Cast and extruded sheets can behave differently. Confirm thickness, edge expectations, whether the face must stay protected, hole and corner details, mounting method, light transmission, and exposure. Small inside corners also inherit the radius of the cutting tool.

ACP for routed panels and signage

Aluminium composite panel (ACP) is a sandwich panel with aluminium skins and a core. It is lightweight and commonly used for cladding, signage, display, and routed panel work. CNC routing can profile the sheet or create controlled grooves for folding when the design and product allow it.

Where ACP works well

  • signage and branded panel components;
  • façade and interior panel shapes;
  • lightweight sheet assemblies;
  • routed-and-folded details designed for the specific panel construction.

Questions to ask about ACP

ACP varies in overall thickness, aluminium skin, core, coating, fire classification, and approved application. Groove depth and fold geometry must be controlled. Confirm the exact product, use environment, edge treatment, fixing method, bend requirements, and any relevant building or fire requirements with the responsible project professionals.

How to choose the right CNC material

  1. Start with use. Is the piece art, a door feature, a screen, a sign, a façade component, or part of an assembly?
  2. Define the environment. Indoor, sheltered, wet, sunny, handled frequently, or exposed to impact?
  3. Set the visual goal. Natural grain, painted relief, transparent detail, sharp graphic shape, or panel finish?
  4. Confirm dimensions. Overall size, thickness, relief depth, smallest detail, and installation clearance.
  5. Plan the finish and mounting. Sanding, sealing, paint, polished edges, hardware, backing, joints, or folds can influence the design.
  6. Check the actual product. Make decisions from the specified grade or sheet—not a generic material name.
