CNC carving is a computer-controlled manufacturing process that removes material to create shapes, patterns, lettering, cut-outs, and sculpted relief. A digital design guides the machine, while the selected cutting tool, material, setup, and finishing work determine the physical result.
The process is useful because it combines digital repeatability with the depth and texture of a machined surface. It can produce one custom panel or repeat the same design across a larger project. How CNC carving works
A CNC router does not “understand” a picture in the way a person does. It follows machine instructions created from prepared geometry. A typical project moves through these stages:
- Define the outcome. Establish the intended use, final size, material, installation conditions, visual reference, and quantity.
- Prepare the geometry. A vector drawing may be enough for profiles and jaali work. A 3D relief needs surface geometry with suitable depth and detail.
- Create the toolpath. CAM software converts geometry into movements for a particular machine, cutting tool, stock size, and strategy.
- Set up the material. The stock must be supported, held securely, and referenced correctly on the machine.
- Machine the work. Roughing passes may remove bulk material before smaller tools create finer detail.
- Finish and inspect. Depending on the project, the piece may need cleaning, sanding, sealing, painting, assembly, or mounting preparation.
Each stage affects the next. A highly detailed model can lose clarity when made too small. A thin panel may not suit the relief depth shown in a reference. A file that opens correctly may still require different toolpaths for two different machines.
2D cutting vs 3D relief carving
The easiest way to understand the difference is to think about depth.
